Zusammenfassung
Die Brexit- und Trump-Kampagnen haben gezeigt, wie weit wir auf dem Weg zu einem Regime notorischer Lügner bereits vorangeschritten sind. Die Politikwissenschaft sollte selbst die Aufdeckung offenkundig wahrheitswidriger, ungesetzlicher oder unethischer Behauptungen und Maßnahmen betreiben, mit denen Politiker, Parteien und Regierungen versuchen, Bürger zu täuschen und ihre verfassungsmäßige Verantwortung zu unterlaufen oder zu hintertreiben

Am 21. Februar 2017 veröffentlichte die Washington Post die Analyse eines Faktencheck-Teams, wonach Trump als Präsident während seiner ersten 35 Tage im Amt 133 „falsche oder irreführende“ Behauptungen erhoben hatte. Die Post zog den Schluss, Trump habe „sich seit seiner Wahl zum Präsidenten in seinem Umgang mit der Wahrheit nicht geändert“. Die häufigsten Aussagen – 24 an der Zahl – betrafen Einwanderungsfragen (Cillizza 2017; Kessler 2017). Nach der Präsidentschaftswahl 2020 setzte Trump diese Praxis bekanntlich mit der unbelegten, aber unermüdlich wiederholten Behauptung fort, der Wahlsieg sei ihm „gestohlen“ worden.
