Environmental Assessment of Recycled Waste

Abstract

The plastic cell-filled concrete pavement (rigid pavement) consists of a framework of plastic cells over the compacted subgrade/sub-base, filled with concrete which has proved to be a very promising solution for overloaded vehicles, inadequate drainage facilities, and waterlogging problems. The technology also helps to achieve the sustainability goals in road construction. The study develops a methodology to assess the Ecological Footprint of a plastic (waste) cell-filled concrete pavement construction. The Ecological Footprint of plastic cell-filled pavement construction (3.75 m width, 100 mm thickness and 1 km length) is estimated as 22–23.45 gha. The Ecological Footprint of per square meter surface area of the plastic cell-filled concrete pavement construction is about 0.0058–0.0062 gha.The economic assessment of the plastic cell-filled concrete pavement construction has been estimated as estimated as Rs 1.47–1.53 million. The enviro-economic assessment of the plastic cell-filled concrete pavement indicated that the plastic cell-filled concrete pavement is eco-friendly and cost-effective compared with the conventional pavements (for low traffic volumes).
