Abstract

Ectopic parathyroid glands are parathyroid glands which are located outside of their expected or normal locations. Ectopic parathyroids commonly occur as a result of abnormal migration during embryogenesis (Roy et al. 2013). Their ectopic location could also be acquired due a large parathyroid gland itself that gets displaced from its normal locations due to its own large size or track down due to gravitational pull. Ectopic parathyroids could also result due to relative displacement from their position due to mass effect of a large thyroid gland as in multinodular goitre. Iatrogenic ectopic parathyroid adenomas may be seen in post-parathyroid autotransplantation.
