Endoscopy of the Spine

Abstract

Endoscopic spine procedures have undergone over 30 years of evolution and innovation. Decreasing muscle trauma, avoiding significant soft tissue stripping, and minimizing bony resection prevents iatrogenic instability and provides patients with decreased pain and disability. Furthermore, they represent a tool for the spine surgeon to provide targeted access to spinal pathology and ultimately elevate the standard of treating patients.

It is worth to mentioning that current evidence suggests that surgeons should anticipate higher than normal rates of complications, symptomatic recurrences, and treatment failures early on when selecting spinal endoscopic surgical techniques. Complication which are often described are durotomies, neural injury, cauda equina syndrome, wound infection, postoperative instability, symptoms persistence, postoperative discitis, and hematomas.

The variable complication profile seen with spinal endoscopy is also likely related to the substantial learning curve and progressive skill adoption.

To achieve deeper knowledgment in this surgical field as a neo- or experienced spine surgeons, the authors present an overview of the most important complications faced in this method of surgery according to their long-standing experience.
