Abstract

The Yangtze Mid-River Delta, or ‘the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River’ is a large city cluster known as China’s strategic fulcrum of dynamic growth pole. In the form of a middle triangle, this major city cluster is concentrated around major cities in the central part of China. With its center as the city of Wuhan, we note the high-level significance of the city cluster and its industrial structure. We provide a comprehensive understanding of the cluster’s sustainable development plan from environmental, economic, and social perspectives before discussing its pathways to achieving China’s carbon neutral plan. As a major medium-level city cluster, we highlight two significant challenges of immature coordination mechanisms and ecological protection strategies at the regional level. This city cluster, located almost in the central parts of China, is connected with most parts of China through transportation and communications links.
