China’s City Cluster Development in the Race to Carbon Neutrality

Part of the book series: Urban Sustainability ((US))

Abstract

As the first case study chapter, this chapter delves into the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster. It is a political center moving toward a major industrial and innovation chain in China. The chapter introduces the case with a brief overview of the current status, a historical analysis of the city cluster, and an overview of its industrial structure. We provide a detailed understanding of the current problems and evaluate them against China’s sustainable development plan. Lastly, similar to all the case study chapters in the book, we provide an overview of the pathways towards achieving China’s carbon neutrality plan by highlighting major opportunities and challenges of the region or city cluster.
