Abstract

Accessibility is recognized as a basic necessity for any individual. 15.3% of the world population has a moderate or severe disability. The World Report on Disability highlights that 60% of disabled people face difficulties accessing hospitals due to architectural barriers. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development promises to work for a disabled inclusive development worldwide. Although many national and international guidelines have discussed barrier-free building design, healthcare buildings, including tertiary care hospitals, are behind in their implementation. Lack of clarity to identify gaps in building design and inability of existing laws to secure financial commitment to include a barrier-free environment are reasons for authorities to escape from developing disabled-friendly hospitals. To implement barrier-free healthcare design, tools for identifying gaps must be developed, and multidimensional and intersectoral participation between various stakeholders with in-depth knowledge and awareness about the specific needs of the disabled population must be involved and implemented on a long-term basis.
