Abstract

Postpartum collapse, sudden loss of consciousness/ reduced consciousness due to multi-organ system involvement till 6 weeks post-partum, is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality and requires multidisciplinary approach. The causes of postpartum collapse could be direct (Obstetric causes) or indirect (non-obstetric causes). The most important causes are reversible and include thromboembolism, toxicity, tension pneumothorax, tamponade, hypovolemia, hypoxia, hypo/hyperkalemia and hypernatremia, hypothermia, eclampsia and severe Pre-eclampsia. Obstetrical warning scores in routine postpartum care are of immense help in early diagnosis and timely intervention. Regular audit of maternal near miss cases is important to review and reframe the obstetrical protocols. Simulation based training plays a vital role in improving the resuscitation skills of the staff.
