Abstract

Schistosomiasis is a chronic helminthic infection that establishes a long-term, multi-year relationship with its human host in endemic populations. Acute schistosomiasis can occur in non-immune individuals 14–84 days post exposure to a primary infection or heavy reinfection, especially in high transmission areas. It has an average incubation period of 41.5 days. The symptoms of acute schistosomiasis was first described in Japan more than 100 years ago as Katayama fever. More recently, it is referred to as Katayama syndrome. The outbreak of acute schistosomiasis has a serious impact on an individual’s health and hinders the development of social economics in endemic areas. Effective prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment will significantly decrease the burdens associated with acute schistosomiasis.
