Abstract

The polymer industry belongs to the era of the modern industry far from the man or cattle-powered industry of previous era. Manufacturing in Sub-Saharan Africa is said to be lower than in all the other parts of the world. Much of the African output comes from the agricultural and extractive sectors. Plastic consumption in the region has reportedly risen by 150% in the past 6 years. Many of the companies involved in the manufacturing of plastics in Africa mainly carry out the conversion and molding of plastic resin into finished products and parts. While seven OPEC countries are located in the continent and around 8% of global petrochemicals production goes into plastics production, much of the resins used in plastic and polymer product manufacturing in Africa are imported. Rubber and cotton are the two main polymeric raw materials produced in the region. Others include paper, wood, leather, and polymers in food products, such that much of the polymer production within the content originates from agriculture and forestry.
