The Rise of the Middle Class in Contemporary China

Abstract

This chapter comprehensively reviews the historical process of the growth of the “middle class” in several countries and regions. According to the line of “the degree of spontaneous growth of the middle class” and “the function of government”, it divides these into the following typical patterns: “spontaneous growth”, “spontaneous growth with policy promotion”, “the rapid rise of the middle class and intentional impetus given by the government” and “middle-class growth frustrated by policy failures”. Among these countries, East Asian countries, including Japan, Hong Kong of China and Taiwan of China, have a highly realistic reference significance to China.
