Abstract
The principal result of the classification of surfaces asserts that every compact, connected, orientable, smooth 2-dimensional manifold is diffeomorphic to the connected sum \(\Sigma _g\) of a sphere with \(g \ge 0\) tori, where it is understood that a diffeomorphism is arbitrarily often differentiable, and smoothness is understood in the same way.
