Abstract

The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of the epoxy foam-filling to mechanical properties of laser-welded stainless steel simple panel structures (SPS). The material of the SPS was austenitic cold-worked stainless steel AISI 301, tensile strength 1.64 GPa. The bending and compressive strength of the panels were investigated experimentally by performing three-point bending tests as well as compression tests. Results showed that direction of the cores relative to the bending direction had significant effect on the bending strength of the SPS. Filling the SPS with epoxy foam significantly improved its bending strength. Compressive strength of foam-filled SPS was noticeably better than that of SPS. It was observed that there was a coupling effect based on foam-filling of the SPS. Epoxy foam-filling of the SPS changed the deformation mode of the core under compressive load.
