Abstract

The chapter aims to highlight the importance of subjective, objective and intersubjective domains when engaging in public education and research on wicked problems such as poverty, climate change, loss of habitat and pandemics. The case is made that public education and awareness of critical systemic thinking and practice underpinned by a more relational understanding of complexity and the implications of convergent social, economic and environmental challenges is vital for addressing ‘existential risks’ through transformative thinking and practice.

The Covid-19 pandemic has placed further challenges for international relations.

For Australia to renegotiate cordial relationships with her powerful neighbour it will be vital to stress our common goals and common future based on food, water and energy security to ensure that the convergent challenges of climate change and pandemics are averted.

One example is the nationalist group called “The Proud Boys” who are accused of leading the attempted subversion of democracy in USA and have recently been declared a terrorist group in Canada, according to Newton (2021), who explains that the organisation was founded in 2016 and that:

the Proud Boys lists among its central tenets a belief in “closed borders” and the aim of “reinstating a spirit of Western chauvinism.” In online statements, Proud Boys have claimed they have used violence only in self-defence. But members … have been convicted of crimes against anti-fascist protesters.

The handover of Hong Kong back to China by Britain is not a direct parallel with the takeover of neighbouring countries of Germany, nevertheless history was also cited as a justification by Germany for taking over neighbouring countries. The dispute over the Spratly islands in the South China sea (Lewis and Letail, 2016) are claimed by the Philippines, Malaysia, China and Taiwan. Whilst the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea (known by China as the The Diaoyu archipelago) are also a source of tension around fishing rights, potential oil supplies and are claimed by China, Taiwan and Japan. Lewis and Letail (2016) cite Holloway and Cui (2014) and explain that the Senkaku Islands were annexed by Japan when Japan defeated areas of China, but at the end of the second World War when Japan was defeated, these islands were left out of negotiations.

China has a growing economy and the belt and road approach could be said to make old fashioned conflicts obsolete, even if the build-up in the South Pacific and the mounting trade war seems to belie this argument. Another plus is that the election of Biden could result in more diplomatic relations, but even during the Obama administration, Hilary Clinton made statements about the importance of territorial waters being respected and clearly this approach was unpopular as stressed by my hosts at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Conference.

The disparities within and across nation states will need to be addressed to ensure that everyone has equal access so that at least 50–70% of the population can become immune. This will help to ensure that the pandemic is slowed, vaccines can be updated and eventually when enough people achieve immunity the pandemic can be halted.
