Abstract
Social design is used to demonstrate and promote the value of design, as well as to inspire and prepare the next generation of creative change agents. It adopts a human-centered and collaborative process to understand and address social problems, and it makes tools that support positive change. The designer's professional development process is closely related to the development of contemporary society. Design education is needed to cultivate designers with an active attitude to participate in social change movements. This chapter is based on a Taiwanese university course in social design and the “Green Maker Project”, which engaged students in experiential learning. In this chapter, the practical mode of social design is introduced and its potential for reforming design curriculum in higher education is also discussed. Based on the findings of the study, the chapter proposes a teaching framework that promotes experiential learning of social design as a dynamic teaching mode for design curricula in higher education.
