Environmental Sustainability in Emerging Markets

Abstract

Given that the seafood market is globally increasing, there is a need for eco-friendly business strategies to improve sustainability and achieve a competitive advantage. The study aims to investigate how managers’ perceptions of stakeholder and institutional pressures influence eco-friendly export business strategy and consequently impact supply chain coordination and competitive advantage. Data were obtained from 238 managers of Vietnam’s seafood processing exporters and analysed using structural equation modelling that employed partial least squares. The findings show that the top manager’s sensitivity to environmental problems transforms the firm’s market pressure, regulatory pressure and competitive pressure into the firm’s eco-friendly export business strategy. Importantly, this strategy leads to supply chain coordination, which in turn helps the firm obtain a competitive advantage. This study sheds new insights and contributes to the theory and practice of eco-friendly business strategies and supply chain coordination. Managerial and policy implications are highlighted.
