Abstract

Environmental Justice (EJ) concerns the fair treatment and involvement of all people regardless of race, status, and ethnicity. The Environmental Agency purports that fair treatment means that no group should be at risk to endure the negative environmental consequences resulting from businesses operating with either private or public sector enterprises. According to the World Health Organization, people worldwide live longer, with a life expectancy of 60 and beyond. By 2050, this segment of the population is expected to total 2 billion, with almost 120 million people living in China alone. However, by this time, 80% of all older people will reside in low- and middle-income countries around the world. These figures raise critical EJ and health issues for the elderly. Thus, attention must be paid to the plight of the elderly and the role that the social worker plays in their care. Implications of a social and economic nature beg for the implementation of social work programs and interventions with an EJ theme in the field of gerontology to ensure that the livelihoods of the elderly are supportable. For this reason, this chapter seeks to examine the environmental gerontology and justice issues of the elderly in the Caribbean, as well as the social and economic implications this group is facing. To do so, it will draw upon best practices initiated by Soroptimist International (SI)-Barbados as a primary case study in the Caribbean region.
