Sustainable Approaches in Textiles and Fashion

Abstract

Each year, nearly 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans and it was predicted that this causes a serious climate change. Even though fashion is ephemeral, producing products less toxic helps in protecting the environment. Being a large-scale sector, it is the responsibility of the apparel industry to be sustainable. Denim creates a fashion statement. People of all age groups like denim due to its comfort and looks. Even though it is one of the oldest fabrics, it remains an evergreen classic. Denim is used in many areas, not only trousers, but it is being used for making jackets, shirts, blouses, accessories, etc.

In this study, an attempt was made to compare the fabric parameters of polyester denim with recycled polyester denim. Tests such as GSM, tensile strength, shrinkage and colorfastness were analyzed. The strength and shrinkage results were similar whereas the colorfastness results were the same for both the fabrics. Thus, this study demonstrates in using recycled polyester as an alternative for virgin polyester as there are no drastic changes between the properties of both the fabrics.
