Abstract

The discovery of new faults in the East Java region has led to different perspectives of analyzing dynamic infrastructures including the landfills and one of the major factors in understanding the local site effect is the shear strain. The Ngipik landfill in Gresik, East Java has been using an open dumping method which involves direct disposal of wastes into the surface pit since 2002. There is, therefore, the need to implement strategies to avoid groundwater contamination and one of the appropriate methods is the addition of clay liner. Therefore, this research applied different forms of this method in four simulated modelings and four profiles to assess its efficiency in terms of the surface area dynamic properties using finite element analysis. The result showed the shear strain reduced by approximately 40% from the existing condition. This, therefore, shows the importance of adding a layer such as the clay liner in open dumping landfill.
