Abstract

Global governance can have a significant impact on how the world recovers from a major catastrophe. After the twin tragedies of World War I and the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918–19, the newly formed League of Nations was unable to prevent a vicious spiral of nationalism, protectionism, and economic hardship that would wipe out two-thirds of international trade, plunge the world into the Great Depression, and ultimately sow the seeds of World War II.
