Abstract

The uncommitted water resources in river basins of Maharashtra, the state where water is already diverted through various minor, medium, and major water systems for irrigation and other uses, were estimated. For this purpose, a systematic assessment of water utilization (as committed flows) by major and medium and minor reservoir and diversion-based schemes in each basin was made using official water accounting data for such schemes, and the estimates were compared with the total renewable water resource available in those basins that are allocated to Maharashtra. It was found that the state has surplus water in the Godavari and many of the west flowing rivers which can be exploited for future use. It is suggested that this water can be used for augmenting existing water supply schemes or for developing new schemes. Further, the current thinking and proposals being planned for improving the sustainability of rural water supply in Maharashtra suggest that surface water-based schemes will be the future for achieving domestic water security in the state.
