Abstract
This chapter discusses the development of a complex statistical model that explains groundwater behaviour during monsoon in complex hydrological, geological, geohydrological, and terrain conditions. The model was developed and validated using district and state-level time series data from Maharashtra consisting of rainfall, pre- and post-monsoon water levels, and spatial data on specific yield, landforms, and recharge potential. The model considers two features that affect the recharge from rainfall, i.e. infiltration characteristics of the ground surface and the pre-monsoon depth to water levels, which have not been considered in the past investigations of aquifer behaviour. The model shows that water level fluctuations in the aquifers of Maharashtra during monsoon is a direct function of monsoon rainfall, pre-monsoon depth to water level and recharge potential of the terrain, and inversely proportional to the specific yield of the aquifer.
