Abstract
Appropriate classification of a disease is of importance to better understand the site, severity, and prognosis of a disease. Also, it allows for meaningful comparisons between different clinicians, geographic regions, and researchers. A proper classification system is needed for a better understanding of abdominal tuberculosis (ATB), and to guide the management of this complex entity, and also for similarity in comparisons by researchers and clinicians. ATB can be classified based on the organs involved as luminal, peritoneal, lymph nodal, and visceral (hepatobiliary, pancreatic, splenic). Further classification of these subtypes is based on morphology, pathology, or clinical presentation. Also, the basis of diagnosis could be used to classify tuberculosis into “bacteriologically confirmed” if made on microbiological evidence or “clinically diagnosed” if based on clinical and ancillary investigations. This chapter discusses in detail the various historical classification of ATB and attempts to outline a practical way of classification of ATB.
