Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop the conceptual design a portable oil skimmer by incorporating Kansei Engineering (KE) method. Emotionally appealing designs are currently the norm for consumer products. Meanwhile, it is a challenge for the industrial designers to incorporate the user requirement when designing industrial product. Although the technical specifications can be measured, it is crucial to include criteria’s that could not be measured when designing industrial products. Owing to this reason Kansei Engineering is suggested as one of the tool/methods to cater those issues with regards of identification of user requirement and the technical specification of a product during design stage. The objective of this study is to identify the user & technical requirement to design conceptual design of portable oil spill skimmer using Kansei Engineering approach. This study presents the methodology and results of designing a Portable Oil Spill Skimmer that utilises the Kansei Engineering method. The results showed that there are 12 strongest positive coefficient value design elements and 8 lowest coefficient value design elements correlated to the 6 chosen Kansei words. The Partial Least Squares result shows that medium-sized and square/ rectangular shapes have the highest coefficient values of 0.272764 and 0.244087. On the other hand, cylindrical shape and more than a pair of floating support have the lowest coefficient values of −0.30604 and −0.30278. The steps taken can be a standard guideline that could efficiently assist designers or engineers in analysing both the user requirements and technical specifications.
