Interculturality Between East and West

Abstract

This chapter offers final remarks and suggestions to close the book—although it suggests that it is ‘to be continued’. Going back to a metaphor from the introduction to the book, the authors call for a shift from the ‘solid’, ‘polished’ dominating discourses of interculturality in education and research to alternative, oft-silenced discourses from different parts of the world. They propose three principles: perplexity, modesty and generosity to do so, accepting that one must learn to be quiet and to listen to others in order to be able to dialogue. The keywords of U(nthink), L(isten), D(ialogue) and R(ethink) thus represent important steps for interculturalists to find ways to make interculturality intercultural. It is not about us communicating interculturally, but about us learning to facilitate dialogue around the simplex (simple–complex) idea of interculturality. Listening to silence (why is it that we don’t dare to talk about certain aspects of interculturality?) is also an important aspect suggested by the authors.
