Abstract
Today packaging of food offers an active part in food quality and has progressed from basically a container to contain food which is convenient from harvesting to marketing of foods. Foods with long shelf life, results in small losses because of spoilage. Glass, plastics and metals are widely used as packaging containers since ages. However, there are some main product and health safety concern of packaging for example bisphenol movement and some metals like cadmium. Meanwhile lately the awareness in the packaging industry about the utilization of bioplastics has been shifting from biodegradable/compostable substances towards biobased substances. Silk fibroin thin films, tree fiber films and crab shells gluten films, and mango waste edible coatings and films are some of the biodegradable packages and novel developments in cling film packaging that are shaping the future expectations of food packaging in a good way. Every substance has attractive characteristics and peculiar drawbacks, when talking about food packaging applications. The current chapter will mainly focus on commonly used packaging with some innovations, modifications, safety issues along with regulatory standards.
