Abstract

In this chapter I bring together my previous discussion of the four variants of consumerism into an examination of potential policy strategies I label as progressive and radical options. I illustrate how human management models, those templates society invokes to manage human beings, particularly those who the greater society does not truly want as members, are derivatives of social welfare policy. Recognizing these human management models, both negative and positive ones, I consider how progressive policy approaches can incorporate two strategies: complementarity and extension. I then consider two approaches inherent in what I label as radical strategies involving enhancement and substitution. These strategies can lay the foundation of a more explicit societal approach to consumerism than what exists now.
