Abstract
The introductory chapter of the book explains why an exploration of the links between alternative agro-food networks (AAFNs) and the knowledge-based economy (KBE) is important. It describes the rationale for the book and sets out the social, political economic and historical context for the emergence of both KBE and AAFNs. It introduces the wider debate over the ‘cognitive turn’ of contemporary post-industrial economies and its manifestation in agriculture and food, before delving into a more detailed account of both concepts, also in ways that help us realise the research need and timeliness for bringing these two areas of interest together. The last section of this introductory chapter provides a snapshot of the book, offering a route-map for the reader through the chapters and the argument to unravel.
