Abstract

Tumors of the appendix are predominantly epithelial tumors. Mesenchymal tumors are rare. The fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumors of the Digestive System has updated the classification of epithelial tumors (► Box 21.1). Appendiceal neoplasms include mucinous epithelial neoplasms, neuroendocrine tumors, mixed glandular and endocrine tumors, and other rare tumors. Mucinous epithelial tumors are the most common.
