In the year 2014–2015, at the time this interview was conducted, the Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum collected more than $5.3 billion in royalty payments. These funds were paid to the State Government and used for law enforcement, education, health, roads and community development programs (Government of Western Australia, 2016).
