Abstract

The observations of unconventional quantum oscillations (QOs) in Kondo insulators (KIs) indicate an exotic electronic state realized in these materials and call for new theory. In this chapter, after we provide experimental details for specific heat and thermal transport measurements, we present results on KI YbB\(_{12}\) at low temperature. We clearly observed linear in temperature components in both quantities in zero temperature limit, indicating the presence of gapless fermionic excitations with itinerant character. Interestingly, these sizable contributions lead to striking violation of Wiedemann–Frantz law, demonstrating that YbB\(_{12}\) is electronic insulator and thermal metal. Our results expose novel charge-neutral fermions, which are potentially related to the QOs in high magnetic fields.
