Abstract
There are technical limitations in performing arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery on proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints in the fingers, because the joint cavity is extremely narrow. Since the joint space of interphalangeal joints is not wide enough for the arthroscope to be inserted into the palmar cavity, the palmar portion of the articular cartilage and the volar synovium cannot be inspected. Arthroscopy of interphalangeal joints provides more precise information regarding the status of the intra-articular structures than alternative imaging modalities because magnified observation of the articular cartilage, synovial membrane, and collateral ligaments is possible. The arthroscope and instruments should be moved gently to avoid injury and slippage out of the joint because the joint cavity is extremely narrow and it is difficult to handle the arthroscope and other instruments. Arthroscopic surgery of the interphalangeal joint can be helpful if the indication is carefully selected.
