Abstract
This paper presents the strategies for creating an online course from the learner’s perspective. The paper examines the learners’ requirements for signing up and completing an online course. Two hundred eleven online learners provided their responses to a survey request. It had an open-ended verbatim question. The responses were categorized and then re-categorized to get the most common expectation area. The survey found out that the learners care most about having real-life projects, the instructor’s delivery style, beginner friendliness of the course, and understanding its purpose in the overall context. In each of these areas, there are suggestions and expectations with high-frequency data to work. This survey was done to an open group of people from across the world with an open-ended question. There was no control on the demographics of the learners. Hence, the next stage of the research should be on controlled demographics as the online courses generally are for a niche area. The findings are useful for online instructors and MOOC platforms alike. With data and computing resources becoming ubiquitous, many more teachers will create courses for online consumption. This paper can thus serve as a checklist for instructors creating such new courses.
