Towards a Better Understanding of HIV Prevention Stigma, Religion and Health in Zimbabwe

Health Communication and Disease in Africa

Abstract

HIV incidence remains a huge challenge with 1.7m new infections in 2018 alone. A biomedical prevention option that has been shown to hold potential is pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) but adherence and continuation remains a big challenge. Other options on the horizon include the dapivirine vaginal ring and injectable cabotegravir. The chapter examines the role of religion and stigma in the uptake of PrEP in Zimbabwe. It argues that uptake and adherence is problematic at individual, community and environmental levels and recommends multilevel interventions that take into consideration barriers at each level of the socio-ecological model.
