Abstract

Urban agriculture has provided many benefits to improve the quality of life, economy, and ecology. Despite its broad benefits, the implementation of urban agriculture in Indonesia is still relatively small compared to its full potential. This paper describes how the severe crisis in Cuba during the Special Period of Peace Time had forced the country to adopt sustainable urban agriculture as one of its policies for achieving food security. The absence of fossil fuel and chemical inputs during the crisis had pushed the country to practice organic agriculture. It used organic fertilizers, biological pest control, local technology, conservation of local seed, and produced for local consumption. Actors and factors are analyzed to understand the context. Based on that, it identified lessons for urban agriculture improvement in Indonesia. Literature review from previous research and publications used as references.
