Abstract
The custom ankle foot orthosis (AFO) is an externally applied device used to support and improve the function of lower limb through walking and modify the structural or functional characteristics of the neuromuscular system. AFOs can be divided into three groups: passive, semi-active, and active. There are two kind of orthoses: custom and off-the-shelf. In this paper, the natural frequency of custom ankle foot orthosis (AFO) was measured using impact hammer test. Using AFOs by the patient, vibration data (RMS) acceleration and frequency were measured at two positions (ankle and cuff of AFO) during the gait cycle. From the hammer test, the natural frequency found for the polypropylene ankle foot orthosis design was (18.4) Hz and for the new designed from PLA was (14.2) Hz. Results also show that for the same patient the maximum vibration data was found at the ankle region of polypropylene ankle foot orthosis with 44.97 m/s2 and 1.9 Hz for acceleration and frequency, respectively, and for new design polylactic acid (PLA) of AFO, the maximum vibration data was found at the ankle region with 1.62 m/s2 and 1.5 m/s2 Hz. After vibration analysis of AFOs, PLA hollow model is better material than PP-AFO solid model.
