Abstract

“Inside Contemporary Qatar: An examination of State and Society” is an interdisciplinary book that includes the following themes, the politics and security of Qatar, the political economy and natural resources of Qatar, and the formation of national identity and the social contrast of the state. Each of these themes will delve into the topics of the matter during Shaikh Tamim’s era. The book will offer a holistic understanding of the most important aspects of a state’s development. This book will present the reader with a comprehensive understanding of local, regional and international factors that played a role in forming today’s Qatari state, its governance and policies, its strong economy, and its modernizing society.

    The 1973 oil crisis began in October 1973 when the members of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) proclaimed an oil embargo targeted at nations supporting Israel during the 1973 October War.

    The 1979 Oil Crisis, also known as the 1979 Oil Shock or Second Oil Crisis, was an energy crisis caused by a drop in oil production.

    The Iranian Revolution, also known as the Islamic Revolution or the 1979 Revolution, was a series of events that culminated in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

    The Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty was signed in Washington, DC, United States on March 26, 1979, following the 1978 Camp David Accords. The Egypt-Israel treaty was signed by Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, and witnessed by United States president Jimmy Carter.

    The Iran-Iraq War was a protracted armed conflict that began on September 22, 1980 when Iran was invaded by neighboring Iraq with a primary goal to cripple Iran and prevent Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini from exporting the 1979 Iranian Revolution movement to Shia-majority Iraq and threaten the Sunni-dominated Ba’athist leadership. The war lasted almost eight years, ending on August 20, 1988 when Iran accepted a UN-brokered ceasefire.

    The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), is a regional intergovernmental political and economic union consisting of all Arab states of the Persian Gulf—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—except Iraq. The Charter of the GCC was signed on May 25, 1981, formally establishing the institution.

    The Israel-Jordan peace treaty referred to as Wadi Araba Treaty, was signed at the southern border crossing of Arabah on 26 October 1994.

    The invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990 was a two-day operation conducted by Iraq against the neighboring State of Kuwait, which resulted in the seven-month-long Iraqi occupation of the country.

    The Gulf War (August 2, 1990–February 28, 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (August 2, 1990–January 17, 1991) for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (January 17, 1991–February 28, 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq’s invasion and annexation of Kuwait.
