Abstract

The importance of the stress concentration for machine design is immense. With the help of the stress concentration factor, the maximum stress acting on a body can be obtained from which safer designs can be established. From Roark formula, one can calculate the stress concentration factor for elliptical hole on a flat plate subjected to uniaxial tension for eccentricity ratios which vary from 0.5 to 10. For eccentricity ratio greater than 10, no formulation is available. In this paper, FEM software ANSYS has been used to formulate the stress concentration factor for an elliptical hole with high eccentricity ratio on a flat plate subjected to uniaxial tension. The formula can be used to find the stress concentration factor of a flat plate with a central elliptical hole of high eccentricity ratio.
