Abstract

The concluding chapter offers a reflection on the different contributions of this volume, as well as an agenda for further research. Engels and Monier challenge the reader by highlighting the role of lasting systems of gifts and patronage, and emphasise the influence of conflicting norms and political changes for the rise (and absences) of debates about colonial corruption in one context, but not in another. They again stress not to treat “colonial corruption” as only about and taking place in the colony. Moreover, in the final section of their chapter, they also point to structures and myths of colonial times that have survived into the post-colonial era, such as persistent cultural stereotypes and mental patterns that describe former colonies and their societies as intrinsically corrupt.
