Xihaner Carwash: Dream Home for People with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract

On August 8, 2015, Xihaner Carwash, a carwash employing a dozen of people with intellectual disabilities, opened at No. 11, Kaifeng Road, Futian District, Shenzhen. It washed 11,869 cars within the very first year of its foundation. On August 10, 2016, with the help of Shenzhen Xihaner Carwash, Qinghai Xihaner Carwash opened successfully. It hired 14 intellectually disabled people and four hearing-impaired people. By the end of 2017, Shenzhen Xihaner Carwash had washed up to 32,175 cars, and a total of nine more Xihaner Carwashes had opened nationwide.

    Xihaner is the affectionate nickname people give to persons with intellectual disabilities. Intellectual disabilities refer to all kinds of disabilities of people mentally or intellectually, including Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, intellectual impairment and autism. “Xi” means affection. “Han” is the nickname for these people. And “Er” means “forever young”. Xihaner refers to intellectually disabled people who are loved and acting like children forever.

    Forrest Gump is the hero of an American novel Forrest Gump written by Winston Glum's, which tells an inspirational story of a man with intellectual disability named Forrest Gump who persevered to pursue his own dream and created a legend eventually. As a student, Forrest Gump had to run away from other kids who laughed at him and bullied him all the time, which made him become a good runner. Thanks to that, he joined rugby team, entered University, and even became a rugby star. During the Vietnam War, Forrest Gump won a medal for saving his fellow soldiers in the battle. After he left the army, Forrest Gump started his own shrimp catching business and became a successful entrepreneur. Later, he ran across many states in America, which made him a celebrity by accident. The novel Forrest Gump was published in 1986, and was later adapted into a film with the same name, starred by Tom Hanks as the hero. The movie was shown in July 1994 and won six Oscar awards the next year, including the best movie, the best actor and the best director. Forrest Gump is a successful representative of persons with intellectually disabilities, and a model inspiring the group.

    Based on the data of the sixth national census in 2006 and The Second National Sample Survey on Disabled, China Disabled Persons’ Federation calculated the number and proportion of each type of disabled people by the end of 2010.
