Abstract

One of the most common applications of calculus involves the determination of minimum and maximum values. Consider how frequently you hear or read terms such as greatest profit, least cost, shortest time, greatest voltage, optimum size, greatest revenue, least size, greatest strength, greatest distance, and so on. Problems of this type ask for the best value of some variable quantity and hence are called optimization problems.
