Part of the Composites Science and Technology book series (CST)

Abstract

Graphene has attracted interests in both academic and industrial areas in recent times because it can produce improvement in material properties even with low quantity. In fact, utilization of graphene-based materials in the fabrication of various nanocomposites with different polymer matrixes has been continuously explored all over the world. There are, however, several types of graphene containing powder materials known such as graphene oxide, graphene nanoplatelets, graphene nanoribbons, graphene quantum dots and graphene enabled products such as graphene ink or graphene master batches. Flexible packaging is one of important areas where incorporating graphene in to polymer matrix in most cases among other improves the thermal, mechanical and barrier properties to a larger extent. In addition, well known antibacterial and/or antimicrobial activity of most of the graphene based materials can also be utilized for packaging purpose. Another interesting and important possible newer application of graphene-based biopolymers is in the thermal management in buildings for cooling and heating purposes. This chapter presents and discusses the development of graphene-based biopolymer nanocomposites and their applications in packaging and building applications with special focus on protective coatings and phase change materials.
