Abstract

China has been experiencing rapid urbanisation since the launch of economic reform and open-up policy in 1970s. Urban areas expand dramatically which resulted in a large amount of farmland converted into construction land. Aiming to preserve farmland for food security while providing enough space for urban development, the Link Policy was proposed by the central government in 2005. Under this scheme, farmers who previously lived in spacious and scattered villages were relocated into the centralised communities and their original homesteads were consolidated into farmland. Land quotas created from rural resettlement can be transferred by local government for urban construction while the total amount of farmland remains unchanged. The implementation of the Link Policy has significantly influenced China’s rural society. Given that, this chapter introduces the background and motivation of the study. It provides an overview of the book by stating the research questions, aim and objectives, and outlining the book structure.
