Abstract
In Roseki (2018), played by Hakka TV, Director and Playwright Lou, Yi-An uses the form of stage performance “play-within-the-play.” Roseki represents the lives and literature works of Lyuu, Heh-Ruo, recognized as “the first gifted scholar” in Taiwan in the 1940s during Japanese colonialization. Lou adapts Chang, Wen-Huan’s Capon and Lyuu’s six short novels into scripts in the total 14 episodes with theatricalization of various stage designs. Each of the main actors plays multiple roles. Roseki performing by multiple languages is accompanied with music, piano, yueqin and singing. 29 songs, including Lied, art songs, Bel Canto, Taiwanese folk songs, NSO National Orchestra, match with the plots. I interpret theatre by history, post-colonialism and Postcolonial Feminism, on literature, politics, national identity, and women’s voice in Asian performance.
