Abstract
This chapter is the first of four chapters that introduce and analyze different case study areas in Tokyo. The chapter examines the cases of Hikifune and Kyōjima, especially the spatial, social and economic transformation of the neighbourhoods. It introduces local and creative actors whose diversity reflects how the spatial transformation of the area is also affecting its social makeup, especially in the last decade. Divisions are growing between old and young, longstanding and new, impoverished and wealthy residents, following traditional or contemporary, and mainstream or alternative lifestyles.
