Abstract
Sugar is one of the most widespread commodities in today’s world. However, this white crystal-looking simple sweetener travelled through ages and across almost every possible trade route developed in historical world before it became common in kitchens in every home. More than 2000 years ago, sugar was derived out of sugarcane in India. The profound curiosity of human to make different varieties of sugar for enhancing essence and taste of a variety of eatable products and purposes introduced Speciality sugars to the world. Increase in confectionery industries, rapid inclusion of speciality sugars in various cuisines and availability of hundreds of varieties are boosting the market of speciality sugars at a healthy CAGR.
In India, with the growth of sugar industry, the speciality sugar segment has started growing rapidly. Since 2014 with the exception of 2017, India’s economy has been the world’s fastest growing major economy with current growth rate of 7.5%. The effect of growth is reflected everywhere, and sugar industry is no exception. The sugar as a commodity is being branded as fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) product. The branding of sugar is becoming more and more common and production of speciality sugar continuously showing an increasing trend. The demand for pharma sugars, white crystalline sugars, various types of brown sugars, candy sugars, etc. in attractive and handy packs is increasing day by day in India. The scope of this segment in India and export potential will help in management of surplus sugars in India.
