Abstract
The reported incidence of viral pneumonia has increased over the past decade. To some extent, this apparent increase simply reflects improvements in diagnostic technology, but the actual increase appears to have occurred. Depending on the virulence of the organism and the age and comorbidities of the patients, viral pneumonia can range from mild self-limiting diseases to life-threatening diseases. Some viral pneumonias, such as CMV (cytomegalovirus) disease, usually occur in patients with weakened immune function.
