Abstract

In Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC), 70% of citizens lives in street houses (SH). The facade of this type of housing has been paid attention to while the roof has not been taken care of, which is greatly affecting the environment and urban image. The objective of this study is to assess the current status of the roof of SH in HCMC in order to offer solutions to improve the quality of living condition as well as increasing the aesthetics of the urban image. First, the SH roofs of various locations in HCMC are selected to take the survey. Then, the collected data are synthesized, analyzed and categorized to show the types of SH roofs according to their functions, materials and structures. Next, 5 typical roof styles among these houses are chosen to be measured the microclimatic parameters including roof surface temperatures and glare. Finally, based on the quantitative results, practical solutions that are appropriate to the current situation are proposed to meet future development capabilities. The results of this study will contribute to the completion of construction codes, standards, urban management and design regulations, which helps to upgrade the urban appearance and enhance the quality of life for residents in urban areas.
