Abstract
This study investigates the role and identity of the Chinese government interpreters in practice. Interpreting, as language in use, can be explained as a sociocultural resource as well as a set of linguistic systems, of which each offers an interpreter a choice of ways of expressing ideas and intentions of speakers he or she interprets for.
