Abstract
On 26 April 1996, the heads of state of the five countries China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan met in Shanghai to discuss security confidence-building measures along their shared borders and to resolve existing border disputes. This was the founding meeting of the multilateral club named Shanghai Five, the predecessor of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
